Practical test

The practical test can take place.

However, the ‘Application for a driving licence’ form will be retained by the test centre and will only be returned to you on presentation of the functional identity document.

A candidate who fails the practical test twice can start an appeal. This appeal shall be lodged within 14 days following the date of the second failed test. The appeal, signed by the candidate, specifies the last name, first name, date of birth of the latter as well as the examination centre where the test took place and the date of the test. It is motivated by facts concerning exclusively the persons or circumstances of place, time and procedure in which the test has been carried out.

When the examiner of an examination centre decides to exclude from the theoretical test and to issue a failure certificate to the driving licence candidate who has committed an irregularity, the candidate, if an adult, his/her parents or the legal guardian if (s)he is a minor, may appeal to the commission. This appeal shall be lodged within 14 days following the failure and the exclusion. For categories AM, A, B, G

You can cancel your appointment up to 24h before the date of your appointment.

If you are unable to present yourself for the practical test for which you have registered, you must notify the examination centre two full working days before the date of the test, Saturday not included (Find the contact details of our centres here). For example, if you have an appointment for the Tuesday, you must cancel your appointment at the latest on the Thursday of the week before.

If you fail to do so, you will be required to pay an additional fee of 25 € at your next appointment. (For category A, A1 and A2 tests, you will also have to pay the charge to book the motorcycle following you.)

For categories C, D

Your appointment must be confirmed by paying the test fee at least ten days before the date of the test. If you fail to do so, your appointment will automatically be cancelled. Test fees will be refunded if you notify the examination centre that you will not be attending at least eight working days before the date of the test, Saturdays not included.

Should an event of force majeure prevent you from attending, the additional charge can only be refunded by our supervisory authority.

The documents required depend on the category of test and your method of learning to drive. We therefore advise you to consult the specific page for the category of test in question. Select your category of test under ‘Tests’.

ALL DOCUMENTS MUST BE THE ORIGINALS AND MUST BE VALID

If anything is missing, the test will not take place and you will automatically be charged for the administrative costs.

How the test proceeds

A number of new features were introduced to the practical test from 1st July 2018:

Self-evaluation

This test, carried out on a computer before the beginning of your test, consists of defining your level of skills on the road after your driver training. A list of skills is displayed on the screen. For each statement, you are required to score, from 1 to 5 (very good), the level you believe you have reached after your driver training. This evaluation will not affect the result of your test. The examiner will look at your self-evaluation on completion of the test. It will enable the examiner to objectify the final debriefing.

New driving manoeuvres

As part of your test, you will be required to perform two manoeuvres on the public road. The first of these, which is mandatory, is performing a stop on the left of right of the road. The second is drawn at random by computer from the following manoeuvres:

3-point turn

Reversing in a straight line

Parking perpendicular to the roadway, going forward

Parking perpendicular to the roadway, in reverse.

Independent driving

You will be required, for a period of 10 minutes, to drive on the public road, directing yourself (i.e. without the examiner telling you which direction to take) and using the road signs. If there are no road signs, the examiner will intervene. The start and end points of this independent driving test will be given by the examiner.

If, on the day of your appointment, the weather conditions are particularly bad or if the roads appear impracticable, call our customer service department on 087/57.20.30 to find out whether the tests are running normally.

The choice of examination centre is entirely up to you.

Practical tests are by appointment only. You are advised to register 6 weeks in advance for this test. You can only make an appointment via our customer service department by calling 087/57.20.30 (Monday to Friday from 7.00 am to 5.00 pm). Call volumes are lower between 7.00 am and 8.30 am and between 12.00 noon and 1.30 pm. You must have your provisional driving licence with you, as well as your identity card and pass certificate for your risk perception test when you call.

For categories C and D, please confirm your appointment by making the payment at least 10 days before the date of the test. If you fail to do so, your appointment will automatically be cancelled.

If you are taking your practical test with the driving school, you will need to make an appointment with the driving school. The driving school will then handle making an appointment with the examination centre.

The test will take place on condition you have with you the receipt issued by your local council offices providing that you have applied for a renewed car, plus you must have the expired identity card with you. The application for a provisional driving licence and/or driving licence will be kept in the examination centre’s database and only issued based on presentation of the valid identity card.

No receipt? The test cannot take place.
