Learning

Category AM, A1, A2 or A

If you have a provisional driving licence for categories AM, A1, A2 or A, you may not carry passengers for the category in question.

Category B

Provisional driving licence issued after 3rd February 2014

If you are learning to drive privately, you may only be accompanied by one (or both) of the 2 private instructors stated on the provisional driving licence and/or by a qualified driving instructor.

If you are learning to drive via an accredited driving school, you may be accompanied by a maximum of 2 persons who must meet the following three conditions:

  • They must be registered in the population register, the register of foreigners or on the waiting list in a Belgian municipality and hold an accepted identity document. (Students and diplomats are subject to other conditions.) For more information, please contact the examination centre or your local council;
  • They must have held a Belgian or European driving licence valid for category B for at least 8 years and valid to drive the vehicle driven by the candidate. Drivers who are allowed only to drive a vehicle adapted for their disability may not accompany a candidate, except if he or she has the same disability;
  • They must not be disqualified from driving (currently or within the past 3 years) and, where applicable, they must have passed any tests ordered by the courts.

Other category

If you have a provisional driving licence for a different category, you may carry one passenger in addition to your private instructors, making a maximum of 2 persons: i.e. 1 private instructor + 1 passenger, or 2 private instructors.

The private training ground at our examination centres cannot be used to practise driving, even outside opening times.

However, some local authorities and/or driving schools make their training grounds available to candidates, possibly for an hourly fee.

To prepare for the practical test, you can choose between a practical driver training course at an accredited driving school and private driver training.

Important: For some categories of licence, practical basic training is required, even if you are learning to drive with a provisional driving licence.

For category AM, learning to drive with a provisional driving licence is not possible.

For more information, select your category of test under ‘Tests’.

The choice of test center is entirely free.This rule now also applies to the practical test…

You are free to choose the inspection station. You may therefore present your vehicle at any station other than those listed on the invitation.

You are allowed to change your method of learning once while you are learning to drive and request a provisional driving licence for the other method of learning, on condition that you passed the theory test less than 3 years ago.

The period of learning already completed will be taken into account for the new method of learning. You will be subject to all of the conditions that apply to the new method.
