Candidates who passed their theory test after 30/06/2018 and who wish to continue learning to drive privately, must attend a learning session beforehand, along with their private instructor(s).

This learning session is aimed at the candidate and private instructor(s). The session must be attended by the candidate and the private instructor(s) before beginning to learn to drive on public roads.

Duration: 3 hours of lessons provided by an accredited driving school or attended by e-learning on the AWSR  or BTI Belgium website, Conduct-Belgium and GOFORDRIVE..

Validity: at the end of this session, the candidate and private instructor will each receive a certificate valid for 5 years. These certificates must be valid and presented (both for the candidate AND the private instructor) on the day of the practical test. The certificate awarded to the private instructor can be used for multiple candidates.

Period before taking the practical test: 3 months minimum from the date the certificate for attending the learning session is issued and from the date on which the provisional driving licence is issued.

For category B provisional driving licence issued after 03/02/2014 + other categories, the private instructor may not be mentioned as private instructor for another candidate during the year prior to the date on which the provisional driving licence was issued.

However, this does not apply:

With regard to:

– his/her spouse, his/her legal or actual cohabitant;

– his/her children, grandchildren, sisters, brothers and pupils;

– the children, grandchildren, sisters, brothers and pupils of his/her spouse, his/her legal or actual cohabitant;

If the private instructor and the candidate are registered with the National Office of Social Security as staff members of the same company that provides driver training for its employees;

If the private instructor and the candidate work together for a fire service.

Category B

  1. Must have held a Belgian or European driving licence valid for category B for at least 8 years.

Category B+E/C1/C/C1+E/C+E

  1. Must be at least 24 years old
  2. Must have held a Belgian or European driving licence valid for the category of the test for at least 6 years

Catégorie D1 – D – D1+E – D+E

  1. Must be at least 27 years old
  2. Must have held a Belgian or European driving licence valid for the category of the test for at least 6 years

Except for the same candidate, not to have been mentioned as a private instructor on another provisional driving licence during the year prior to the date on which the provisional driving licence was issued. However, this does not apply:

With regard to the person’s own children or those of his/her spouse;

If the private instructor and the candidate are registered with the National Office of Social Security as staff members of the same company that provides driver training for its employees;

If the private instructor and the candidate work together for a fire service.
(This rule does not apply for an 18-month provisional driving licence.)

They must be registered in Belgium and hold an identity document issued in Belgium.

They must not be disqualified from driving (currently or within the past 3 years) and, where applicable, must have passed any tested ordered by the court.

Drivers who are allowed only to drive a vehicle specially adapted for their disability may not act as a private instructor while a person is learning to drive.

Category B model 36M:

If you obtained your provisional driving licence after 03/02/2014, two private instructors may be mentioned on your provisional driving licence.

You can change private instructor while you are learning to drive, provided the modification is noted by your local council on your provisional driving licence.

Category B model 18M:

The private instructor is not mentioned on the provisional driving licence and therefore is not permanent.

For categories BE, C(+E), D(+E), two private instructors may be mentioned on your provisional driving licence.
