Going for a technical inspection

After removing the trailer coupling device and for administrative purposes, the vehicle must be presented at an inspection centre.

The registration application is valid for two months from its date of issue.

You can estimate the current waiting time using our webcams. Click here.

Make an appointment online or via our customer service number on 087/39.39.49. Unfortunately, this service is not available for all types of vehicle and inspection. For more information, click here.

If your vehicle has been issued with a technical inspection certificate with a limited validity, a re-inspection must be carried out at the same inspection centre in order to check that the defects noted have been repaired.

Nevertheless, if you opt to go elsewhere, a fresh full inspection will be carried out and charged for.

IMPORTANT: Make sure that you present your vehicle within the period stated on the technical inspection certificate. If this period is exceeded by 2 months or more, you will require another full inspection.

You must make an appointment (087/39.39.49) for a re-inspection if one is required after an accident or for an inspection of your lowered suspension.

When you are selling a vehicle, a technical inspection ‘for the purpose of sale’ must be carried out, even if the period inspection is still valid.

If your vehicle has passed a full inspection in the previous 2 months, you can benefit from a simplified inspection. This inspection takes the form of a visual inspection on 33 additional points, plus a brake test. At the end of the inspection, a ‘visual inspection of the vehicle’ document, valid for 1 year, will be issued to you. An official stamp will also be affixed to your most recent inspection certificate.

If, during the visual inspection, your vehicle is found to have a defect, a full inspection will be carried out.

Because the vehicle is registered, a fresh ‘used vehicle’ inspection must be carried out.

For a periodic inspection, your caravan has to be empty but with all it needs to operate.

Under no circumstances may its load exceed the maximum authorised mass (not on public roads, nor when presented at an inspection centre). A check-weigh test may be carried out on our premises.

You can also request a weigh on your own initiative. Weighing costs €16.50.

In this case, the vehicle must be presented with the fuel/potable water/gas tank filled with to a minimum of 90%.

  • Empty, but with all it needs to operate
  • Clean on this inside and outside so that any dirt does not interfere with the tests to be carried out
  • Seatbelts buckled up
  • Tyres inflated to the recommended pressure
  • Chassis number and identification plate clearly readable
  • No studded tyres or snow chains
  • Correct engine oil level
  • Engine properly maintained and at the right temperature
  • Towbar fitted
  • Permanent four-wheel drive: tell the inspectors for the brake test

Child seats do not have to be removed, provided it is possible to buckle and unbuckle all of the seatbelts.

Does your vehicle need to be weighed? Please present your vehicle with the fuel tank/potable water/gas tank filled to a minimum of 90%.

As soon as modifications or alterations are made to your vehicle, you must present it at an inspection centre to check that you can use it safely.

Trailers for which the Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) exceeds 750 kg are subject to an annual technical inspection (two-yearly for camping trailers, boat trailers and glider trailers) from the time they are registered.

Trailers for which the Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) is equal to or less than 750 kg are exempt from any technical inspection.

Don’t forget that your trailer coupling device is also subject to a technical inspection before it is first put on the road, as well as during periodic inspections and after it has been removed.

Following documents are required for the inspection:
• Registration certificate (vehicle section)
• Certificate of conformity (if required)
• Latest inspection certificate (except first inspection)
• Identification report (except first inspection)

In order to prove that a part is original to the vehicle, i.e. that it was fitted at the time the vehicle was delivered, you must have one or more of the following documents:

A certificate from the manufacturer or its authorised representative

This certificate must state that the part is original to the vehicle and also state the chassis number for the vehicle.

A catalogue (of the make of vehicle) showing the part

The purchase invoice for the vehicle, provided by an official distributor for the make of vehicle, stating the parts added

An instruction manual mentioning the part

For the following items, a validation report must be requested from the approval department at the Federal Public Service Mobility and Transport.

Vehicles intended for racing must have an ‘additional certificate for racing vehicles’, issued by one of the following competent federations:

CSN (Commission Sportive Nationale),

ASAF (Association Sportive Automobile Francophone)

VAS (Vlaamse Autosport Federatie)

A certificate issued by one of the latter two federations must also be countersigned by the CSN. Important: certificates have limited validity.

Is your vehicle powered by LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) or CNG (compressed natural gas)? In this case, in addition to the basic technical inspection, it is subject to a specific LPG/CNG inspection.

Is the vehicle factory-fitted with an original LPG/CNG installation?

In this case, this extra inspection will only be performed during the first basic technical inspection (periodic, secondhand…).

Important
The regulatory checks linked to this kind of installations must be carried out by an authorised installer before the vehicle undertakes a technical inspection.
A CNG installation for example must undertake a visual check on the tanks before it is 4 years old! Contact your vehicle dealer or an authorised installer for information.

Is the vehicle retrofitted with a non-original LPG/CNG installation by an authorised installer?

The vehicle must be presented within 30 calendar days in one of our inspection centres to check on the conformity of the installation and notify the competent tax authorities, regardless the year of the vehicle or its use.

In case of periodic inspections

The inspection of the installation will be carried out during the periodic inspection.

Does the installation comply with the regulation?

If the installation meets the standards, a label shall be issued and affixed to the windscreen of the vehicle. If any defects are reported in terms of the LPG/CNG equipment, the vehicle will receive a certificate with a limited or no validity; this is the case even if the vehicle is in good condition and is not powered by gas anymore.

Has the installation been removed?

The removal must be carried out by an authorised installer who will issue a specific removal attest. The vehicle must then be presented within 30 calendar days in one of our inspection centres, independently of any other technical inspection.

This inspection is designed to offer a form of consumer protection for the buyer. In principle, the ‘used vehicle’ technical inspection is carried out by the seller. However, the whole point of a technical inspection is that it relates to vehicles and not their owners. So inspection centres carry out their work regardless of the person who comes with the vehicle.

You can present your vehicle with one of the following registration plates:

– The most recent registration plate of the vehicle

– Another Belgian plate which is not cancelled. A registration plate is considered to be cancelled if it has been returned to the DIV, if it has been lost or stolen, or if it has not been assigned to a vehicle for more than 4 months.

– As from 4/01/2021, you have the possibility to use a “national plate” meant for any natural or legal person established in Belgium. This plate is linked to a single vehicle for a period of 20 consecutive calendar days. Its validity can be checked via the 2 green stickers on the plate (day and month). This plate is white with green characters and begins with the letters “UA” followed by the date.

The use of trade plates is exclusively limited to professionals which have to prove that they are authorised to use them by presenting a ‘use of commercial plates’ certificate. Only registration plates from BENELUX are accepted.

The existing regulations on public roads remain applicable, especially regarding your insurance coverage.

Whatever happens, as a buyer and in order to avoid misunderstanding and disappointment, please carefully examine the documents given to you. You must also compare the information stated on the Car-Pass with the kilometre reading displayed on the vehicle’s odometer.

If your car has been in an accident, an assessor will decide whether it requires an inspection after an accident. This aim of this inspection is to check that your vehicle can go back on the road without endangering either its occupants or other road-users.

In addition to a basic inspection, specific measurements are also taken of the geometry of the wheels and the chassis. This assessment is made based on data provided initially by the manufacturer.

If the vehicle is presented with trade plates, only registration plates from BENELUX are accepted. Provisional French WW-plates are not accepted anymore.

Important: not every inspection centre is authorised to carry out this inspection. Call our call center at 087/39.39.49 to make an appointment.

The inspection is not in the owner’s name. Any driver may go to the inspection centre with a vehicle, provide he/she has the required documents.

Exception: when presenting a vehicle with commercial plates, the person bringing the vehicle for inspection must be able to prove that he/she is part of the business (garage).

The inspection centre you choose is entirely up to you. This means you can present your vehicle at a station other than the one mentioned in your inspection notice. However, if you have to make a re-inspection following a red failure notice, the vehicle must be presented again at the same inspection centre.

Important: some inspections are not carried out at all our centres. For more information, click here.
