From the age of 18, a category A1 licence is required for drivers of motorcycles with a maximum engine capacity of 125 cc, with maximum power of 11 kW (15 hp) and a maximum power/weight ratio of 0.1 kW per kg.
For drivers aged over 20, a category A2 licence is required for motorcycles with maximum power of 35 kW (47 hp) and a maximum power/weight ratio of 0.2 kW per kg. The vehicle may not be derived from a model with more than twice its governed power.
For drivers aged over 24, a category licence A is required for motorcycles with power in excess of 35 kW. This age limit is reduced to 22 for drivers who have held a category A2 licence for at least 2 years.

- If you obtained your category B licence after 1st May 2011, you can, two years later, drive a motorcycle or scooter with a maximum engine capacity of 125 cc, limited to 11 kW (15 hp), with a maximum power/weight ratio of 0.1 kW per kg, on condition you have attended four hours of training at an accredited driving school. If this is the case, there is not practical test or theory test to take.If your licence a was issued before 1st May 2011, you are not required to attend training to be able to drive a moped or scooter, although this training is strongly recommended by all professionals. Driving lessons are available at driving schools and at ongoing training centres.IMPORTANT: this system (A1 licence with category B licence) only allows you to drive in Belgium. To drive in other countries, you must hold a full category A1 licence in its own right.
- If you obtained your category B licence before the end of 1988, you can drive a motorcycle or scooter on public roads with no limits on power or engine capacity. However, for safety reasons, we recommend attending a training course at a driving school or ongoing motorcycle training centre.

Theory test A - A1 - A2
If you wish to obtain your category A1, A2 or A driving licence, you will first have to pass a theory test consisting of 50 multiple-choice questions. To pass, you need to score a minimum of 41 points out of 50.
To prepare for the test, you have the choice between theory training at an accredited driving school and self-learning training.
The theory test is valid for categories A1, A2 and A licences. Once you have obtained one of the category A licences, you will not have to take the theory test again to change category of licence.
What happens if you pass the theory test?
If you pass the theory test, you will receive a pass certificate that is valid for 3 years. You will then have to undertake practical training through an accredited driving school.
What happens if you fail the theory test?
If you fail the theory test, you cannot present yourself to take the test again on the same day that you fail.
A1 practical test
If you have passed your theory test, to prepare for the practical test, you have the choice between lessons at an accredited driving school and lessons covered by a provisional licence.

If you are missing any documents, the test will not take place and you will automatically be charged an administrative fee of € 25. You will also be charged for the cost of the following motorcycle (€ 19).
Identity card out of date? The test will take place on condition that if you have the out-of-date identity card with you and can present a receipt issued by your local council offices proving you have applied for renewal. The application for a provisional driving licence and/or full driving licence will be retained in the database at the examination centre and will only be issued on presentation of a valid identity card. Without the receipt, the test will not take place.
What happens if you pass the two practical tests (on private land and public roads)?
You will be issued with a request for a driving licence that will enable you to obtain your driving licence from your local council within a period of 3 years following the time you pass the practical test.
What happens if you fail the practical test?
You cannot present yourself to take the test again on the same day that you fail.
After failing the test on 2 occasions on private land and/or after failing 2 times on public roads, you will only be able to take the test again after attending 2 hours of additional driving lessons.
The vehicle from the accredited driving school is compulsory from the 3rd test onwards.

From 1st January 2019, the test vehicle must have minimum power of 50 kW and an unladen mass of more than 175 kg.
Given that the unladen mass is not always stated on the certificate of conformity, the vehicle will be accepted provided the smallest of the values available (unladen weight, kerb weight, actual weight) is more than 175 kg.
Passed
